Voxel World

Voxel World is a project centered around a fictional exhibit comprising various installations utilizing VR, AR, and 3D technologies. The primary aim of this project is to create an interactive and engaging exhibit that facilitates learning about history, science, and other subjects.

Targeted towards elementary students and their teachers, the exhibit serves as an extension to the traditional curriculum. Additionally, visitors have the opportunity to build their own voxel creations, which can be added to the virtual exhibit.

Voxel World: Focusing on using play to bring learning to life.

Research

During my research process, my focus was on strategies to effectively engage elementary school students and encourage their involvement in the exhibit. A prominent theme that emerged was the potential impact of virtual reality on learning. I conducted interviews with three elementary school teachers to gather their insights.

Their feedback emphasized the importance of the exhibit in activating students' interest, establishing connections between the exhibit and their curriculum, fostering a desire for new knowledge, and encouraging curiosity and exploration.

findings

The core of this project revolved around merging play and learning through the utilization of tools such as VR and 3D. It was imperative that these tools were accessible to students and fostered creativity, while also showcasing 3D and VR as more than just gaming platforms.

The final project was presented to the same three teachers for their feedback, and their responses were overwhelmingly positive. They agreed that a museum like Voxel World would be engaging for their students and a valuable resource for their classes.

I dedicated significant time to researching potential competitors and utilized a positioning map with four key values (inactive/interactive and museum/knowledge center) to determine Voxel World's unique positioning.

By strategically placing its overall goal in a niche that wasn't already occupied by competitors, Voxel World emerged with a strong emphasis on interactivity and positioning itself as a knowledge center rather than a traditional museum.

Exhibition

To gain insight into the exhibition's atmosphere, I created three mood boards. The first focused on the exhibit itself, including its functions, rooms, and interactive elements. The second centered on the branding of the exhibit, while the third explored potential collaborations with schools and teachers to enhance both learning outcomes and enjoyment for students. Collaboration with teachers was integral throughout the process, from before their visit to after. This approach allowed students to create their own digital content prior to their visit, engage with the exhibit during their visit, and receive materials for further study to take home with them.
